There are 3 ways to coach or train someone,
1. Through Audio (Telling Someone),
2. Visual (Showing Someone) and
3. Kinaesthetic (Through manipulation and touch)
There are also 2 approaches to coaching which represents the relationship between Coach and Client
1. Autocratic (Coaches/Trainers way or the Highway) and…
2. Democratic (Where the coach and client sit down, share ideas and debate). This is always going to end in the coaches favour but it leaves the client feeling that at least they do and can have a say in aspects of the training and be aware of what direction they’re going in.
Now the BEST WAY to coach or train someone is to show them how to do an Exercise or Drill CORRECTLY! What’s the point in showing them how NOT to do it, it’s just gonna cause conflict, confusion and lay seeds of doubt in their mind!
This brings me onto the role of THE INFLUENCER
An Influencer is a person who is regarded as an EXPERT within their particular field that also has a STEADY FOLLOWING.
Right so with regards to the NEW GENERATION of FITNESS INFLUENCERS that FLOOD our Social Media Feeds day in and day out,
1. Do they have a STEADY FOLLOWING? Most likely
2. Do they come across as seeming to know what they’re talking about? YES to those that know no better!!!!!
3. Are they EXPERTS in THEIR FIELD? HONESTLY? I’d say 1 in 10 know what they are talking about, the other 9 (or 90%) are just talking out their arse to get more clicks which makes them more $.
I don’t want to dwell too much on this because AGAIN this subject of THE FITNESS INFLUENCER is for another time but with regards to COACHING TECHNIQUES…..
They are Influencing through both AUDIO and VISUAL but with an AUTOCRATIC approach which I would argue a lot of FOLLOWERS then feel inclined to believe and FOLLOW SUIT
One of the things that REALLY BOTHERS me is that the 90% that we see on our feeds , start by saying YOU’VE BEEN DOING IT WRONG ALL THIS TIME, COMPLETE NONSENSE, STOP BLAH BLAH BLAH AND THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!
Well what I would suggest to these CHARLATANS is fine, you believe an exercise is executed in a certain way then SHOW US how it’s done from the outset. DON’T start by dissing on how it SHOULDN’T be done - IT’S BAD COACHING…
BUT in the COLD LIGHT of DAY the majority of you don’t really give a shit about that.
What I would say to those of you that want to embark on YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY or are already on it
Avoid these idiots on Social Media, chances are you’re already doing what you need to do and hitting your goals - their aim is to stifle you, put doubts in your head and the only solution is to follow them….
If you’re not sure then reach out to your LOCAL Gym or Leisure Centre. Book yourself in with a CERTIFIED PT and let them take you through the process.
I can assure you, a lot of what you are seeing on your feeds is absolute Horse Shit!
